The Difference Between Largo Mold Damage Remediation and Removal

SERVPRO Handles Mold Remediation Safely in Largo Properties

The terms mold remediation and removal get used almost interchangeably, but they mean different things. Remediation refers to removing building materials and articles that have no restoration potential. The term mold removal is not accurate regarding the mitigation in a Largo home. Mold spores are naturally occurring in most environments, except for spaces where the air and surfaces received a hospital-sterile level of cleaning.

SERVPRO technicians have several applications to handle mold damage remediation in Largo. First and foremost, while the technicians define the scale and scope of the infestation, they also root out the cause creating the ideal environment to sustain mold colonies. Reasons for a mold damage situation vary from:

  • Mold spores float harmlessly both inside and outside structures
  • When the climate is warm and humid, the likelihood of spores germinating and growing increases
  • Although mold can exist in temperatures ranging from just over the freezing mark to 120 degrees F, it prefers a range from the seventies to the nineties.

How Does Mold Damage Look on Flooring?

It is impossible to look at the flooring and know if mold colonies exist beneath. However, there are tell-tale signs that the need for mold mitigation exists:

  • A musty odor in the room that never dissipates
  • Pushed up nails in floorboards
  • Visible mold growth on boards or carpet
  • An area of carpet that feels damp consistently

Common Reasons for Mold Within a Home

Mold damage behind a wall is not unusual and commonly results from a leak the homeowner was previously unaware existed. Another frequently seen issue SERVPRO technicians deal with regularly is improperly installed or the lack of a vapor barrier between the interior and exterior walls.

How Much is Too Much Damage From Mold?

When sheetrock-constructed walls have mold colony growth, this type of mold damage is too severe to clean and reuse the building materials, requiring disposal. While fiberglass insulation can often get washed and dried for reuse after a water damage incident, the presence of mold changes the outcome. SERVPRO technicians have vacuum attachments specifically designed to collect insulation from within walls.

When the mold damage affects areas of the property, such as closets where clothing items are present, the Esporta System can clean and sanitize washable fabric items in a single cycle. While SERVPRO technicians have access to powerful steam cleaning equipment, upholstery with mold damage rarely has the potential for use due to the probability of mold spore penetration and existence within the piece of furniture.

Special Considerations for Homes With HVAC Systems After Mold Damage

When SERVPRO technicians handle mold remediation services, they carefully section off the worksite to limit the number of spores traveling to another area. The techs can also inspect the ductwork in the home to see if it needs cleaning due to the mold infestation.

Mold Damage Treatments

After removing the mold-damaged articles, SERVPRO’s AMRT applied microbial remediation techs to verify the issue causing the infestation. By following the IICRC guidelines S520, our team can address and work to apply lasting mold mitigation treatments to inhibit the return of the problem. These applications range from antimicrobial cleaners to sealants.

SERVPRO of Largo at (727) 586-0060 brings decades of experience and professional equipment to handle any size mold damage remediation safely within Largo residential properties.

Property Owners in Largo Look to SERVPRO for Mold Removal

Effective mold removal from your Largo home requires careful assessment, proper equipment, and expert knowledge. Hiring specialists like SERVPRO can ensure mold is safely and completely removed from the affected area as quickly as possible.

SERVPRO techs use state-of-the-art technology during mold removal from your Largo home. Once the techs establish the scope of the damage, they create a mold remediation strategy following the IICRC S520 guidelines. The goal is to ensure the safety of the techs and occupants and to prevent the spread of mold on unaffected areas of the property.

Structural Mold Remediation Strategies

The most crucial objective of structural mold removal is to prevent mold spores and fragments from the surface to the indoor air. Removing mold contamination without taking proper precautions can lead to the aerosolization of the spores and increase the risk of cross-contamination.

SERVPRO techs use the following engineering controls to prevent this from happening:

  • Isolation of the contamination area
  • Establishing pressure differentials between the contaminated and uncontaminated areas
  • Using air-moving devices to control the airflow
  • Using HEPA vacuums

SERVPRO mold specialists use engineering controls as the first line of defense for ensuring the safety of workers and occupants.

The Role of Pressure Differentials

It is crucial to prevent the contaminated air from leaving the containment zone and mixing with the air in uncontaminated regions of the building. SERVPRO techs use pressure differentials to accomplish this goal.

We use negative air machines (NAMs) fitted with HEPA filters to create low pressure in the containment zone. As air moves from a high to a low-pressure region, the chance of contaminated air leaving the containment zone is significantly reduced using this strategy. SERVPRO techs maintain a pressure differential of about 5 pascals between the contaminated and uncontaminated area.

SERVPRO techs use IICRC-S520 mold remediation guidelines during the mold inspection of your Largo property. Our mold specialists use advanced tools and moisture-sensing equipment to detect problem areas of the structure where conducive conditions are present for mold growth.

Need for Controlled Demolition and Surface Cleaning After Mold Damage

If visible mold damage occurs in porous materials such as drywall, insulation, or ceiling tiles, SERVPRO techs must carry out a controlled demolition to remove the contaminated material. We take care to limit the aerosolization of the spores during the process.

SERVPRO techs remove the contaminated material in as large sections as possible for bagging or wrapping. We use heavy-gauge 6-mil polyethylene bags to hold the contaminated material.

Techs perform demolition work with proper engineering controls in place, including-

  • Designated containment zones
  • Humidity control
  • Maintaining negative air pressure

HEPA Filters in Mold Remediation

SERVPRO techs use HEPA filters to capture dust and aerosolized mold spores before spreading to unaffected building areas. Our experienced technicians understand the risk of spreading the contamination and take every possible precaution to prevent it.

We also ensure that the contaminated materials are disposed of according to local and city regulations.

SERVPRO Mold Remediation Technicians Can Reduce the Impact of Microbial Growth in your Largo Home

Need a Mold Inspection of your Home or Business in Largo – Call SERVPRO

High humidity, condensation, and water leaks are common in our service area of Largo and surrounding locales. With the addition of moisture, mold spores in our environment germinate and produce colonies inside walls, under sinks in kitchens and bathrooms, and shower areas. Mold colonies can also grow inside attics with poor circulation. A strong, musty odor is often the first indication that many people have a mold issue in their homes or businesses.

SERVPRO is licensed to provide mold inspection and remediation in Largo, Florida. The state requires specific inspection and documentation protocols based on the size of the area impacted by the mold colony. For complex mold infestations, a third-party IH industrial hygienist inspects, tests, and provides prescribed remediation, which we must follow.

Two fundamental requirements must be satisfied whenever mold is observed in someone’s home. We can identify the source of the moisture and remove it. Whether it is a water leak or caused by allowing the humidity to remain too high inside your home, either can contribute to mold growth. Often poor circulation in some areas of the house can be the culprit.

Secondly, during the remediation process, we prevent the distribution of mold spores and moldy material to other home areas. We install plastic barriers and create negative pressure areas to control mold spore distribution following industry, state, and local bylaw-mandated protocols. SERVPRO can also assist in repairing structures damaged by mold infestations.

SERVPRO offers the following services to our residential and business clients:

  • Mold visual inspections, remediation, and removal
  • Bathroom mold removal
  • Attic mold removal

Steps to restoring your home

  • Debris removal

A fire can leave behind an enormous amount of wreckage and debris. SERVPRO IICRC-certified technicians sort through burned items and properly dispose of any non-salvageable items, setting aside recoverable items for cleaning. How and Why SERVPRO Restores Largo Home After Damaging Events

6/5/2022 (Permalink)

a small bit of mold growing on a wall of a house Sometimes the mold damage starts out small before the infestation spreads. Keep an eye out and contact SERVPRO to quickly start the remediation.

Largo Homeowners Trust SERVPRO for Mitigation of Structural and Content Damage with Fast Action

When Largo residents find their homes damaged by fire, water, storms, or mold-they require aid immediately to halt further loss. Our SERVPRO is local, and we are members of the community and support our friends and neighbors with whatever type of restoration services they need.

Water damage in Largo homes happens from plumbing, appliances and sometimes accidents such as a forgotten bathtub faucet left running and remember only when the water from the tub dripped from the ceiling. When you contact SERVPRO for water extraction, our certified Water Restoration Technicians (WRT) immediately scope the property to determine areas where water migrated.

We have access to state-of-the-art equipment to perform all types of specialized water removal. Most of our extraction equipment is a combination of a heater, pump and vacuum unit. We use all three components when pulling moisture out of carpeting or upholstered furnishings to prepare them for drying. For most other types of water removal, the vacuum feature alone removes water efficiently.

Drying a water loss in a home requires more powerful airflow than a standard household fan can provide. Our certified technicians perform techniques to aid in the drying of a room such as drilling weep holes in saturated sheetrock or removing baseboards, so a more significant amount of airflow reaches inside wall cavities. Our air movers blow at such high velocity that they cause embedded moisture to rise for easy removal. After drying, we scope the room to ensure that no excess moisture remains and that it meets our preset drying goals. After the completion of water damage restoration efforts, SERVPRO technicians wipe down all water-affected surfaces with our professional-grade cleaners, so life at home gets back to normal quickly for the residents.

If storm damage hits a Largo residence, SERVPRO stands ready to help. We arrive on-site soon after the initial phone call and perform any needed temporary measure to prevent additional damage to the property such as tarping over a damaged roof or broken window to prevent further water from entering.

Flood damage needs cleanup efforts as quickly as possible. If standing water is over two inches deep, we deploy submersible pumps, so no time is lost in performing water extraction. We scope the rooms and determine item by item what our technicians can save through our specialized cleaning methods. Because groundwater is a category three biohazard, many porous objects such as carpeting have no potential for restoration and require removal from the site for health reasons. In this geographic location, saltwater intrusion can complicate the cleanup and restoration services. To prevent secondary damages like rusting, degradation of wood, especially laminated products, SERVPRO should be called in for the service.

SERVPRO technicians undergo extensive training through the methods as taught by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. When water wicks into sheetrock, once it has warped or buckled, restoration is not an option. We perform a controlled demolition technique known as "flood cuts" to help additional airflow go into wall cavities and save more of the structure for rebuilding.

After completion of flood damage mitigation, our SERVPRO location carries a general contractor license #CBC1250662, and along with storm damage cleanup, we can also rebuild the property and return it to its preloss condition. Using one company for the necessary mitigation and reconstruction saves the hassle and stress of screening and hiring a contractor on top of dealing with the storm damage.

Mold damage in Largo homes needs addressing as soon as you make the discovery. When choosing a company to assist with mold damage, you can rely on SERVPRO as we hold a State of Florida mold remediation certification #MRSR1163 and we follow the best practices to eliminate the colonies and repair the issues that caused the hospitable conditions for spore germination.

Largo homes with fire damage get fast attention from SERVPRO emergency response teams. When a portion of a residence has a fire loss, we contain the area with thick plastic or use negative air chambers dependent on other factors on-site to stop the spread of soot.

Fire debris removal happens quickly as charred items contribute only to the spread of soot and foul odors. We inspect the fire-damaged possessions as we clean to find items with restoration potential. We use different methods from hand wiping with dry-cleaning sponges to a full immersion bath for non-porous items to altogether remove smoke residues, and these techniques assist homeowners in lessening fire loss and avoiding costly replacements. Walls, ceilings and floors receive testing for the type of smoke damage, and we apply the proper cleaning techniques for the best outcome in each case.

Our certified Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration Technicians have access to the same type of equipment as the Library of Congress uses for historical documents. When essential papers, books, or other valuable files have damage from smoke or water, we have several different types of restoration methods to use to save them from getting counted as a fire loss including:

  • Air Drying
  • Dehumidification
  • Freezer Drying
  • Vacuum Freeze Drying
  • Vacuum Thermal Drying

We use different types of equipment to eradicate smoke odors in the home. For mild scents, time-release gel pellets overtake residual odors. When the odors are deeply embedded and strong, we have equipment such as thermal foggers or hydroxyl generators that bond with odor-causing soot molecules and neutralize them.

There are cases where the fire damage is so severe that the only option is to perform controlled demolition, save what building materials we can and deploy odor neutralization methods to get the property ready for reconstruction. When this occurs, we can also rebuild for the homeowner.

Why SERVPRO? We know when Largo residents contact us for restoration services, they have experienced a stressful situation in their homes and require assistance. We respond with compassion and professionalism. We communicate with both property owners and adjusters to ensure everyone remains on the same page for each phase of the mitigation process. Our custom-created reports assist with expediting the insurance claim filing process as it contains detailed descriptions along with before and after photos. We do everything to take as much stress as possible off property owners during restoration or reconstruction.

When home disasters happen contact SERVPRO of Largo at (727) 586-0060, and we arrive quickly after your initial call no matter what type of restoration services required, we return your property to its preloss condition, "Like it never even happened."

What Could Mold in the Closet of Your Largo Home Mean?

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

Mold on walls SERVPRO will get to the root of your mold problem and work to eliminate and prevent further growth. Call us today for assistance.

Addressing Mold Damage as you Discover it in Your Largo Property is Crucial.

With such a confined space as a closet in your home, mold and microbial threats could quickly impact many items in the immediate area. Active colonization could indicate several possible threats to your house or underlying issues that you might want to consider.

Underlying Water Damage

Wet and moist conditions are a catalyst for effects that require mold damage remediation in Largo homes. When you see spotting on areas like the drywall or other structural elements, humidity and moisture have likely been long-standing enough to facilitate ideal colony growth and spread conditions. Addressing mold damage means also identifying the cause of moisture concerns in the process.

Effects on Drywall and Structure

Remediation targets hosting materials that can be salvaged with deep cleaning approaches and mold removal tactics. For construction elements like drywall, it is unlikely that our professionals will have the appropriate environmental conditions or state of the sheetrock to protect this surface material. Controlled demolition is a last resort approach but a definitive answer to preventing the further spread of active colonies.

Contents and Fabric Damage

Storage areas like the closet are home to many types of contents and varying materials. Organic matter is food for mold colonies, so products like cardboard boxes storing next season's wardrobe or keepsakes become a vulnerable point for additional colonization. With clothes and loose contents, we have a few needed actions to prevent greater damage to affected belongings, such as:

  • Relocation
  • Soft Material Cleaning
  • Deodorization

Mold does not typically begin as a widespread and threatening situation for area homes and businesses. Small areas are usually impacted first, and the problem spreads. Our SERVPRO of Largo team can help remediate mold damage before it overwhelms a household. Call us at (727) 586-0060.

Will SERVPRO Restore Mold Damage in Belleair Bluffs?

10/21/2021 (Permalink)

Got mold? Call SERVPRO! If mold is left unchecked, it can spread very quickly. Contact our IICRC certified mold damage remediation team for an assessment today.

Yes, SERVPRO's Mold Remediation Process is Here For Your Property.

Fire and water damage is easy to spot and remove from homes in Belleair Bluffs. Since mold is a quiet disaster, it is much harder to find and just as challenging to clean and remove.

Mold damage in Belleair Bluffs starts with tiny mold spores. Typically, these spores are harmless to people and property in their homes. When they come into contact with a source of water, they begin to expand and grow, sending extensions called hyphae to search for a food source. When a colony of mold grows large enough, it can damage property and cause other issues. Fortunately, SERVPRO has a plan.

How Does SERVPRO Deal With Mold?

To remove and clean mold from homes, we have developed a series of tasks that stop growth, protect property and clear out spores quickly. Our first step is to reduce exposure to mold. Our technicians isolate contaminated areas to prevent accidentally exposing uncontaminated parts of the home to active mold spores.

We document everything. The restoration team leader starts with our initial inspection and then records the location and size of each instance of mold. We also record the results of the air content testing we make to see how many spores are floating in the air along with moisture levels. We also record air content levels in unaffected rooms to understand the normal levels for each home.

After testing and isolation, we move to control the contamination at its source. To do this, we set up negative air machines which force spores, dust, and other particulates out of the air. Next, we use commercial vacuums with HEPA filters to remove spores from every surface. That includes not just floors and personal property but drywall and ceiling tiles as well.

Now we remove the mold from the contaminated area. In addition to the vacuums, SERVPRO restoration teams also wipe down every surface with a dry cloth or sponge. If the mold layer is very thick, we use water or a cleaning agent to break it up and remove it with a damp cloth or sponge. If the hyphae have grown into building material like drywall, we remove and replace it.

Our last task is to lower moisture levels to normal. It reduces the chance of new mold growth and makes the home more comfortable for residents. We use dehumidifiers to draw water from the air and nearby property.

Returning your Florida home to its pre-mold state is not an easy or quick process. SERVPRO of Largo is here to walk you through each step and even help you with your homeowner insurance company. For more information on what our teams can do for you, call today at (727) 586-0060.

SERVPRO Uses a Phased Approach to Ensure Effective Yet Affordable Deodorization

Bad odor can keep you from enjoying the comfort of your property even after you complete the other fire restoration processes. Odor molecules penetrate deep within some materials in your Largo home, thus acting as a reservoir that keeps resupplying the entire house environment.

Using a single method to eliminate all odors during fire restoration at your Largo home is rarely possible. Although the odor is created in one incident, and your nose probably detects only one type of smell, technically, a bad odor issue is not a single problem. Luckily professional teams like SERVPRO combine several approaches during restoration, so it is possible to eliminate the problem “Like it never even happened.”

Various Reasons Can Make Odor Linger in Your Property, Including:

  • Deep penetration into porous and semi-porous materials
  • Recirculation of odorous materials by the HVAC system
  • Failure to eliminate all odorous materials

Every deodorization method used within a property has some cost attached. Therefore using several methods can lead to an unnecessarily expensive restoration exercise. Our SERVPRO teams find ways to strike a balance between cost and efficiency. Using phased deodorization is one way to limit cost while maintaining efficiency levels.

Phased Deodorization After a Fire Incident Involves:

  • Physical cleaning of burnt residues
  • Chemical containment that blocks vaporization of odor molecules
  • Vapor odor control by releasing deodorizers that vaporize neutralizing airborne odors
  • Fogging to counteract deeply embedded odor molecules

Phasing means that the deodorization is done in phases and the results evaluated before proceeding to the next stage. That way, the process can be stopped at any stage if the results are deemed satisfactory, thus eliminating further costs.

SERVPRO of Largo can help you find solutions for any challenging aspect of fire restoration. Call us at (727) 586-0060 for immediate assistance.

A Very Happy Customer

I hired SERVPRO of Largo to respond to an emergency involving a water line break and significant flooding of my Mom's home. They were quick to respond to help mitigate damage by use of dehumidifiers and air movers. David was most helpful in identifying moisture impacted areas, continued monitoring through the drying process, and decision-making all along the way. His consistent availability was very helpful throughout this ordeal. Ryan was very helpful as Production manager in scheduling the work crews needed ultimately to remove impacted sheetrock from walls and tile floor to expose any trapped moisture. Unfortunately, we did discover mold in some of the walls. The crews worked diligently and carefully to remove the mold-impacted debris in a safe and careful manner. SERVPRO brought in air scrubbers to prevent any migration of mold to other areas of the home. They treated wall voids with a botanical disinfectant to kill any mold spores and encapsulated areas to reduce odors until repairs of compromised wood could be made. All of the employees who responded were very professional, polite, and hard working. A very large area of tile and concrete board underneath had to be removed down to the subflooring. It was very hard work, dusty and labor-intensive. The guys work as neatly as anyone could to minimize dust, including sealing off bedroom doors to prevent dust entering other areas of the home.

All of the guys (Mike, Nick, Dan and Tom) worked hard to get the work done as quickly yet carefully as possible. I particularly want to acknowledge Mike who operated an impact hammer and chisel for two straight days to remove all the flooring tile and concrete. That was very hard work yet he remained cheerful despite the arduous task. All-in-all my experience with SERVPRO of Largo was very positive and I would highly recommend them to anyone going through such a disaster in their home. Every representative I dealt with was courteous, professional and competent in their role. I thank them all very much for working with me so cooperatively through a very trying time.

Importance Of Regulating Humidity For Mold Damage Control In Your Largo Home

8/13/2021 (Permalink)

"Humidity" Mold is a serious issue that should be taken care of right away. Don't wait, call in the experts at SERVPRO!

Regulating Humidity And Mold Damage

Usually, something reasonably obvious like a leak or a flood is the cause of a mold outbreak. You trust this to be the rule to explain mold growth, so microbial activity in non-water damaged areas of your home takes you completely by surprise. SERVPRO knows microbial outbreaks do not always play by the rules, but we have confidence in our mold remediation methods.

Why would mold damage be a problem in your Largo home if the roof is sound and all plumbing up to date? The average on the Gulf Coast of Florida high temperature is 80 degrees all year round, edging into the 90s during the summer months. The humidity is also oppressive. Many homes have central air conditioning or window units to minimize the discomfort of extreme heat and excessive moisture in the air. If your air conditioning system malfunctions or underperforms, the air quality in your home suffers, feeling moist and sticky.

Humidity in your home of more than 60 percent supports mold growth even without any water seeping out of leaky pipes, a hole in the roof, or other water flooding situations. If you try to save on energy use by running your air conditioner infrequently or not at all when the humidity is high, do not be surprised that mold damage is an unintended consequence. When SERVPRO hears a story of mold growth absent an apparent leak, we pay close attention to the moisture level in your home's air. We use precise measuring tools to monitor the humidity levels as we take all the steps necessary to decrease the fungal damage.

Once we contain and remove the mold and disinfect the area, we turn to reducing the moisture content of the air to prevent future mold outbreaks. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers both remove dampness, and we advise continuous operation until the humidity drops. The ideal range is between 30 and 50 percent ambient moisture. Our technicians evaluate the operation of your air conditioners, checking for clogged drainage hoses or other easily repaired issues to improve their air drying capacity. We have portable dehumidifiers to decrease humidity if necessary. As a final step, we help you set up your own AC and dehumidifiers to maintain the levels we achieve with our professional equipment.

Contact SERVPRO of Largo whenever a musty smell or mold growth invades your home. Call (727) 586-0060 for an inspection and depend on us to craft a plan to remove the mold and limit moisture to prevent more growth.

Located on Florida's Gulf Coast in Pinellas County in the lovely Tampa Bay area, Largo gets its name from what used to be one of the largest lakes in the area. Incorporated in 1905, it happens to be the third-largest city in the county and fourth-largest in all of the Tampa Bay region. This city's total area is just under 19 square miles, with over 650 acres comprised of parklands.

Beautiful Year-Round
In terms of climate, Largo, FL, is moderated by proximity to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. During the winter months, there will be warmer, drier temps than the rest of the year. Summer months bring the most rainfall, as this is when ocean breezes shift Gulf moisture inland.

Fires That Have Impacted Largo, FL Throughout the Years
With all of the splendor that Largo brings, it is not exempt from tragic fires, with some that have staked their claim in history. Luckily, local first responders and the Largo Fire Rescue team work diligently to ensure local community members' safety and care with rapid response and tireless efforts.

    •    Nursing Home Fire – March 1953

During this tragic event, 33 lives were lost to include one nurse who worked tirelessly to save at least one resident. When a wind-driven fire reached the one-story nursing facility, it turned into the worst disaster that Pinellas County has experienced to date. Once the fire began around 3 am, it quickly raged and levied the heft of its destruction in about 15 minutes.

    •    Turkey Smoker Housefire – November 2017

Kitchen and cooking fires are common. However, more people are now using deep fryers and smokers for cooking their holiday turkey on Thanksgiving. In particular, one fire took place after an ember coming from a smoker ignited a home, resulting in an immense loss.

    •    Abandoned Building Fire – January 2020

This two-alarm fire broke out in the middle of the night in a building abandoned for approximately a year. The blaze began in the attic before spreading into the roof. Due to the wind, first responders on the team found it difficult to put out the fire. Luckily, no injuries were reported.

    •    Wildfires – Yearly

Unfortunately, due to the climate and landscape in the area, Florida is known for having the second-highest in wildfire occurrences across the United States. Throughout Largo, FL, and Pinellas County, the risk increases whenever the weather conditions are dry and the temperatures rise. Local first responders warn residents of the dangers when wind shifts and wildfires change course toward residential properties. In addition to the threat of structure fires, homes in the region may be susceptible to smoke damage.

Regardless of the cause of a fire, whether it is residential or commercial, prompt action and skilled fire cleanup ensure the best results. Because Largo is a close-knit community, there is always a focus on rebuilding in a time of need, including fire emergencies on any scale. The team at SERVPRO of Largo is available for all of your fire damage and restoration needs. Why does SERVPRO Use Activated Carbon Filters during Mold Remediation in Largo?

Largo Homeowners Need State of the Art Mold Remediation

Any Largo homeowner who deals with fungal growth knows how frustrating it can be. That is why if you call a professional to help, you want to know they will use the best equipment and techniques.

If you need mold remediation in your Largo home, call SERVPRO. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster, and we train our technicians in the latest industry-standard practices to ensure you get the best results.

What is an activated carbon filter?
Carbon is used in mold remediation in Largo because it has absorbent properties, which means contaminant particles have a chemical reaction to the carbon, which causes them to stick to it. Activated carbon is carbon that is treated to be much more porous. The added pores increase the overall surface area of the carbon so it can trap many more particles.

How can activated carbon help in mold remediation?
Activated carbon can trap many kinds of particles, including:
    •    Dust and dander
    •    Lint and pet hair
    •    Smoke, chemicals, and mold

If mold spores are stuck in a carbon filter, they cannot re-enter the air in your home. If the spores cannot get back into the air, then they cannot find new places in your home to start new mold colonies.

How does SERVPRO use activated carbon filters?
One of our essential pieces of kit during remediation is an air scrubber. An air scrubber is a filtration system that uses HEPA filtration to trap microscopic particles, such as mold, and prevent them from escaping. Air scrubbers often have more than one filter, including an activated carbon filter.
Using activated carbon makes HEPA filters more effective because:
    •    The carbon filter traps larger particles such as dust
    •    Fewer particles make it as far as the HEPA filter
    •    The filter will work for longer.

What else does activated carbon do?
Activated carbon is an excellent deodorizer. This is good news during mold remediation as the fungus has a distinctive and unpleasant odor. Our customers frequently tell us that the moldy smell is one of the worst parts of discovering fungus in their homes. We can use activated carbon alongside odor-eating pellets, spot treatments, and fogging to make sure your home smells better.

How Many Companies Should a Homeowner in Largo Call after Flood Damage?

Largo Homeowners are Concerned about Coordinating Flood Damage Cleanup Efforts

Dealing with a home disaster in Largo can be overwhelming. It is a shock when tragedy befalls your home, and you might find yourself feeling unsure of who to call first. Unfortunately, inaction can lead to worse damage, so it is good to know who to call.

If you are the victim of flood damage in your Largo home, you might wonder what to do and how many companies you will need to call. You find yourself wondering:

  • Who will clean up the water?
  • What if the walls or ceiling are damaged and unsafe?
  • What about the soft furnishings – will you need to send them out for specialist cleaning?
  • What happens if a room needs redecorating?

At first, it can seem like you will need a never-ending stream of professionals. You might need a remediation company to pump away the water, a plumber or electrician to fix relevant problems, a builder to replace a sagging ceiling, and a decorator to re-decorate a damaged room.

Thankfully, you can put all of those worries down and call SERVPRO of Largo instead.

What happens when you call SERVPRO?

We will arrange for a callback within the hour, and one of our remediation experts will visit your home within four hours. Timing is crucial when dealing with Largo flood damage. Call us as soon as you can – we are available 24 hours. Delaying puts your home and belongings at risk of:

  • Further damage to personal belongings and soft furnishings
  • An increased chance of fungal growth
  • Deteriorating safety levels if there is damage to your home's structure

What can SERVPRO help with?

We train our technicians to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, Restoration and Certification standards. That means they are experts in all areas of flood damage remediation and can take care of the project from start to finish.

We begin by assessing your home's damage and explaining what we can salvage, what we cannot, and what the cleaning process will look like. Our first step is to make the worksite safe. If necessary, we board up doors and windows, cover roofs with a tarp, and ensure there is a secure electricity supply for our equipment. We provide our teams with heavy-duty aprons, gloves, and respiratory equipment to ensure their safety.

Then we use free-standing and truck-mounted pumps to vacuum water from your home. The more water we extract at the beginning, the easier it is to dry your house and contents. We can also measure moisture in the air and building materials to give a clearer picture of the damage's extent.

We employ air movers and dehumidifiers to dry your home. If necessary, we can also bring in portable heaters. Our SERVPRO teams are experts in the science of drying and know how best to place the equipment. We monitor drying to ensure we get the results we are looking for.

What about cleaning?

We understand that homeowners are worried about cleaning drapes, carpets, textiles, and upholstery after flood damage. Whether we can salvage these items depends on the extent of the damage and whether there are contaminants in the water.

We try to restore items rather than replace them, so you can rest assured that if we can salvage something by cleaning, we will. Some items can be cleaned in place, using hot water extraction or spot cleaning. In some cases, we will send items to our specialist cleaning facility. You do not need to take your items to a dry-cleaner or call in a cleaning company – we will clean for you.

What happens if a project needs specialist expertise?

Flood damage can cause extensive damage to a home. Our technicians can help with:

  • Fixing sagging ceilings or water-logged drywall
  • Replacing damaged doors and windows
  • Restoring or removing damaged electrical items
  • Replacing carpets and repainting and re-papering walls
  • Fixing plumbing and electrical problems

If your home needs specialist repairs that our team cannot carry out, we will bring in contractors and ensure they work to our high standards. That saves you the headache of calling in multiple contractors.

What about the insurance adjuster?

Our team can also liaise with your insurance adjuster for you. We can give them a clear picture of the damage and our remediation suggestions. Our focus on repair rather than replacement reduces the cost of remediation and makes it easier to start an insurance claim.

Whether a disaster is big or small, you can rely on us to take care of everything and leave your home, "Like it never even happened."

For help with flood damage, call SERVPRO of Largo at (727) 586-0060.

You can trust SERVPRO of Largo. This Dunedin family is happy they called our team.

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

A customer review “You were a 'lifeline' for us through the entire process.” Written on a black background. Call SERVPRO of Largo today, we want to help you all the way through!

Our team will be there for your water damage in Dunedin.

On December 4th, in the very early morning hours, water damage occurred in our condo unit. Your company, SERVPRO of Largo, came immediately to mitigate the water. The monitoring, the drying period, and the tear-out for renovation was completed by December 27th.

Following the Christmas holiday, we assumed workmen would resume work, but we sat idle. No one showed up. Our frustration grew. On December 30th , we met with you to learn what would happen next. We were very stressed. The destruction had happened nearly a month ago and we had to turn family away from visiting us for the holiday. Due to the holiday, we went days without any action, and that elevated our stress level. So... when you came for our first face-to-face meeting, we unloaded on you with our complaints and concerns. You listened patiently, absorbed our distress, and you were so calm that you defused the situation and immediately earned our respect! You talked us through the process of selecting the company we would choose to begin the reconstruction. You assured us that we had the option of selecting the company for reconstruction if we wanted to be in control of each step of the renovation (as per a project manager role), or choosing SERVPRO to handle it. As we spoke with you, you presented facts to consider, you reassured us that if we chose SERVPRO, the completed work would look "Like it never even happened." You stated that if anything was not to our approval, you would work to make it right. We believed you.

We carefully considered our choices. We asked you if we chose to go with SERVPRO, how would it work?  You said you would first receive the adjuster's report, assess the damage, write up a step-by-step for the renovation, and show the cost for each step in the renovation. You would send us this bid, and if we chose to go with SERVPRO, we would sign an agreement that could be presented to our insurance company. You promised to send us the bid that night.  True to your word, you did. (In fact, anytime you said you would do something, you followed through!)

When we reviewed the bid and signed the agreement, we said we'd like your best team to be assigned to us, so who would you recommend? You immediately answered:

"Medji, and his team". We met you on January 6th You arranged for the green wallboard installation. You also had arranged for us to meet Medji for the first time. Three days later, the wallboard installation was complete. In preparation for the renovation, we sent you and Medji 6 pages of diagrams and many pictures of the kitchen before the water damage.

Over time we met Medji's good team of hard-working men: Espiro, Romano, Gazi, Landie. They did every task as Medji instructed. Their care of our property was commendable. They fixed things as if it was their own. We respected the pride they took in their work, and the desire to please us. We also respected the creative and careful approach that Medji took to replace the cabinets and island with like-to-like product, and to follow the footprint of the original island (an important detail, since the space in the kitchen is tight.)

The major work was accomplished by February 3rd, just 2 months after the disaster!  It was completed with skill and care, and when walking through the finished condo, it looked the same as it originally had... nothing out of place, and no evidence that anything had ever happened! SERVPRO Uses Technology to Locate Moisture in Your Dunedin Home

1/30/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO drying equipment stacked inside storage facility Water damage? We have the instrumentation to locate moisture and equipment to dry your home.

During Water Removal in Dunedin There are Many Instruments Used to Find Moisture

If your house in Dunedin ever suffers from any plumbing failure, damage to your contents and building materials could result. If water removal is conducted promptly by a professional restoration company like SERVPRO, many of your possessions and building's structural components could are salvageable. In some situations, excessive moisture can ruin items inside your home, such as your carpet and pad.

However, if restoration procedures get implemented correctly, our SERVPRO technicians can often prevent some items inside your home from having to be removed and replaced. The first step to water removal in your Dunedin residence is to find the source of the leak. Once we locate where moisture is entering your structure, we can then take steps to either temporarily or permanently fix the problem. After the leak gets repaired and no more moisture is entering your building, we then can then attempt to figure out where the moisture traveled.

One aspect that sets SERVPRO apart from other restoration companies is the moisture detection instruments we have at our disposal. During every restoration project, we use a variety of different tools to test for the presence of moisture as well as take readings of your house's indoor environment. When extracting water and drying out wet materials, it helps our team to know where the water went. We also test the temperature and humidity inside your home to figure out how we can create an environment that is favorable for rapid drying.

During many plumbing failure situations, your carpet and other floors are the first to get wet. When figuring out what sections of your carpet got wet, we can use a moisture sensor. The sensor consists of a handle with two probes, and should the carpet be wet, the instrument beeps and the handle lights up.

We can also use other moisture meters to get a level of how wet an item is. For example, we can use a non-penetrating moisture meter that can find where areas of your drywall are wetter than others. We can also use a penetrating moisture meter that gets hammered into wooden items like your wall studs to give us a moisture number. When testing your home for wet materials, we take measurements in affected areas and rooms that didn't get wet to come up with a drying goal.

For professional assistance after you notice a water leak, call SERVPRO of Largo at (727) 586-0060 24/7 because We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Is Trapped Water in Construction Materials Damaging Homes in Dunedin?

1/30/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged hardwood floors Water quickly damages flooring materials. We have the tools and the know-how to restore your home.

Removing Trapped Water in Dunedin Home Construction Materials

Wood flooring and framework can hold water for extended periods, being a challenging area for our SERVPRO team to dry in Dunedin homes after a water loss. While surface water can often get addressed with extraction tools and drying techniques, moisture that has penetrated the seams of wood plank flooring and reached into the subflooring can become a challenge for even our experienced professionals. There are many steps and techniques to remove water from saturated wood flooring.

Many homeowners might consider the presence of water in their wood flooring to be a total loss, but water removal for Dunedin homes is more probable than you might believe. Removing the trapped water in these planks starts with understanding the severity of the situation. Our technicians have sophisticated discovery devices and tools that can probe beyond the surface to determine moisture content concentrations and surface meters that can detect the presence of moisture beyond the top layer. Both of these approaches offer unique information that can help to designate the placement and number of drying tools used.

Our SERVPRO team has multiple drying tools like air movers and positive pressure systems to help the evaporative drying processes in structural cavities and specific materials. However, the most effective approach for drawing moisture from water damaged wood plank flooring is drying mats.

These get placed perpendicular to the seams of the installed plank to maximize the drying approach. If more concentrated drying efforts are necessary, we can utilize lay-flat poly sheeting taped and weighted against the flooring in a tent to expedite the drying process. Our technicians can closely monitor the progress of this drying effort with moisture meters to prevent over-drying the materials.

Because hardwood and engineered flooring are both accessible construction materials chosen in the construction of modern homes, knowing the best approach to dry out these materials and trapped moisture can save our customers money. No matter how we can help, give our SERVPRO of Largo team a call today at (727) 586-0060. We have the skills and equipment to make water losses “Like it never even happened.”

HVAC Water Extraction in Affected Dunedin Properties.

1/30/2020 (Permalink)

Two SERVPRO vehicles in a turning on a road. Call SERVPRO! We can be in route to focus on your Dunedin water damage.

Calling a professional team to handle the extraction of your Dunedin home water damage can help in so many ways.

It is hard to associate HVAC systems with water extraction. However, since the entire Heating and Ventilation system touches different parts of the house, including walls, ceilings, attics, or basement, water intrusion is possible. Extracting the water and drying the system is not an easy task considering its components are set up in hard to reach areas of the house. Calling a professional team to handle the extraction can help save your system.

Specialized water extraction in affected Dunedin properties requires several steps. Extracting the liquid water from the ducts is the primary step. Our SERVPRO technicians accomplish this by inserting a vacuum hose to the ductwork through a register or vent. We then hook the hose to a portable or truck-mounted water extractor, which provides the suction needed to remove the water.

Wet-vacuuming may not remove all the water from the HVAC ductwork.  To extract any remaining water, our SERVPRO technicians drill small holes on the ducts to let water weep or drain out through gravity action. After removing the liquid water, we shift focus to drying, which removes excess moisture that can cause other problems such as mold.

HVAC ducts can be made of different types of materials, including fabric ducts, galvanized metal ducts with fiberglass interior, or galvanized metal with exterior fiberglass, among other materials. The type of material determines the effort needed for drying moisture from the system. Typically, our SERVPRO technicians supply hot, dry air into the return portion of the system, drying off moisture.

Whenever water travels through the ductwork, there is a need to evaluate and clean some of its constituent parts. For example, there is a need to remove the fiberglass lining if present. We understand the need to do this following NADCA ACR standards, so apart from extracting the water, we also ensure a NADCA certified technician inspects the system.

Some water extraction processes require specialized skills. Call SERVPRO of Largo at (727) 586-0060 to help restore your property to preloss state. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Smoke damaged kitchen vent hood, cabinets and wall Smoke damage restoration involves more than wiping the soot from the wall. Smoke leaves an odor that necessitates professional removal.

What to Do When Your Largo Condo Needs Fire Smoke Remediation

Even after cleaning up the fire damage inside, the malodor can remain behind if the right equipment is not used to remove it. For this reason, reaching out for professional help after experiencing fire damage inside of your home can be a wise decision.

When your condo requires local Largo fire smoke remediation, it is wise to seek out that help right away. Leaving any fire damage for a significant time in your home could make it harder to remediate successfully. If, for example, leftover smoke damage was the problem in your home, SERVPRO could use a few devices to take care of the issue. Let's say the fire happened inside of your living room two weeks ago, and the visible damage had been dealt with already. However, no matter how much you open windows, or try to ignore the smell with candles, the malodor still lingers.

SERVPRO could use devices like thermal foggers or air scrubbers equipped with HEPA filters to remove the foul scent from the air. The key to remediating the smell is to remove the particles from the air that is causing it. Thermal foggers dispense a chemical vapor into the air that traps the particles and neutralizes them. Air scrubbers pull them into the filter and eliminate them. No matter which device we chose, you can trust SERVPRO to remediate the malodor in your home, and leave it feeling "Like it never even happened."

If the foul scent of smoke is lingering inside of your home after a fire, never hesitate. Get in contact with SERVPRO of Largo by telephoning (727) 586-0060. Whatever the time of day, we're open and ready to help.

Better Management of Stains and Odors after Fire Damage Affects Your Largo Home

Fire damage presents many challenges as you work towards the restoration of your Largo home to its preloss state. Cleaning and rebuilding damaged areas consume most of the resources. However, issues you might consider minor such as unpleasant odor or stains, can ruin the outcome, or delay results. Working with professional FSRT, Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians, from SERVPRO helps manage these problems in different ways.

When performing the initial steps of fire damage restoration in Largo, it is easy to miss stubborn odors and stain through concealments. For example, it is natural to expect odor from charred items. Soot and other smoke residues on surfaces can also conceal stains or cause them if left in place for some time. Our SERVPRO crews have extensive experience dealing with similar incidents so we can anticipate such problems, thus planning to counter them. We achieve this by incorporating odor management and stain removal in the primary cleaning process using products and equipment such as:

Deodorant Granules and Pellets

Odor Counteracting Beads

Liquid Odor Counteractants

Hydroxyl and Ozone Generators

Although odor is invisible, it is made of real volatile particles that the nose senses in the air. The volatile nature of these particles spreads them through the air from the source point to the rest of the house. Hydroxyl and ozone generators produce free radicals into the air. These unstable molecules chemically alter odor molecules through oxidation, neutralizing bad odor. Our SERVPRO technicians set up hydroxyl generators in your house immediately we start the restoration process, ensuring the elimination of unpleasant odor by the time we finish cleaning.

During the fire damage cleaning process, various detergents are necessary to remove soils from surfaces and materials. The detergents might not remove stubborn odors and stains effectively. Our SERVPRO technicians add water-based deodorizers to the cleaning solutions we use to neutralize odors. The deodorizers are formulated to work at different temperatures and pH levels so they are effective even when mixed with other cleaning agents. We also take steps such as pre-cleaning stone surfaces and applying oil on metallic ones preventing stains.

Minor issues can ruin the outcome of a thorough restoration exercise. Call SERVPRO of Largo at (727) 586-0060 to help eliminate all traces of fire damage, "Like it never even happened."

Signs of Water Damage in Your Older Belleair Bluffs Home

Signs of water damage or a musty smell are reasons to give SERVPRO a call to come out and assess the situation. Call today.

SERVPRO Remediates Obvious Water Damage and Finds Where it is Hidden As Well

It is no secret that old homes are plagued by problems. The main issue, whether the house is ancient or modern, is the threat of water damage. It does not take long for it to wreak havoc on a home. One broken pipe could be enough to result in damage which requires several hours of labor and thousands of dollars for repair.

Sometimes the water damage your Belleair Bluff home sustains is very evident and can be spotted easily by the untrained eye. However, it can be a subtle problem as well, creeping up on you and making significant destruction before you realize it is there. No matter the type of water damage, you want to have a professional water damage remediation company come in to help you dry your home out and make the repairs needed. SERVPRO is always ready to assist you with this.

Spotting the Damage

Some signs that you could have water damage are good to keep an eye out for, especially in your older home. Water stains are telltale signs on your wall or ceiling and are usually evident. If you see one suddenly appear, it is a good time to call up SERVPRO and get a technician to check your home to see where the water is coming from.

Buckling walls and floors are another very clear sign, and is often the mark of a severe problem. Wood or drywall absorbs water, making it swell. The result is buckling which you can feel or see when you are walking over the area. It can occur over time like with a small leak in your shower or can happen suddenly like when an appliance floods your home.

Areas which are crumbling, such as the wood around your windows, molding, or baseboards, is also a sign of water damage. Any crumbling may indicate the wood is disintegrating from water infiltration.

Trust your nose as well. The damage might be hidden from your sight, but many times you can detect it with your nose. If you smell a mildew or musty scent, there may be moisture damage behind your walls. SERVPRO can use special moisture meters to detect such moisture and fix the problem for you. A lot of old houses have a musty, old smell, but in rooms, with water damage, the smell is much stronger.

If you cannot see a leak anywhere, you can sometimes sense it, so listen closely. If you believe there is a hidden leak coming from your roof, you should try using your ears to listen. During a rainstorm, turn everything in the house off including the central air or heat. The goal here is to make the house as quiet as possible; then you can stand in different places where you suspect there is a leak and listen. Water dripping through your roof is a very different sound then water landing on your roof.

SERVPRO of Largo can find the source of the leak in your older home and fix it, dry your home and possessions out and repair any damage. All you have to do is give them a call at (727) 586-0060, and they send a technician out to you in a timely fashion, so your home is dry and safe in no time.

Important Flood Safety Preparation Information for Your Indian Rocks Beach Home

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding can occur anytime in Florida. Make sure your family is prepared and have a plan for flood emergencies.

Flood Safety Preparation and Flood Damage in Your Indian Rocks Beach Home

Flooding from heavy storms in Indian Rocks Beach can create a big problem for you and your family. When there is a flood warning issued in your area, that means that flooding is about to start. Sometimes, flooding can begin without warning. If you are lucky enough to know it’s coming, your safest bet is to get you and your family to safety.

The amount of damage the intruding waters can cause to your Indian Rocks Beach home is too much for you to handle on your own. Once the storms have subsided, get in touch with SERVPRO right away so we can help you get your home dry again. Our highly trained technicians and fast service make it easy to see why SERVPRO is the best choice to cleaning up flood damage in your home.

Before you leave your house, you can do a few things to prepare your house for the floodwaters. First, let authorities know you are leaving for a safer place if you can so they are not searching for you if there are recovery operations needed in the area. Moving electronics and valuable items to higher areas is advised as well. If possible, put them on beds, the second floor, or countertops. Floodwaters can also contain contamination from sewage runoff, but SERVPRO techs also can sanitize the affected area after we remove the floodwaters and dry everything back out.

Waterproof bags or containers should be used to store any medical supplies or vital documents. Take your animals with you as well if possible. If not, ensure they have water and food and are in the safest place where you can put them.

Leave your freezers and refrigerators open. You can prevent them from floating around in this way and causing additional damage to your home. Turn off the water, gas, and electricity to your home, and put sandbags over drains and in your toilet. Doing so prevents sewage from backing up into your home. You can do this even if you do not plan on evacuating.

We may need to toss some wet and contaminated items, such as carpeting, and replace them with new. We can also cut out drywall to where the water level came up and replace that, too.

SERVPRO of Largo understands that when your home in Clearwater, Belleair, or Belleair Shores has experienced flooding, it is a very stressful time for you and your family. That is why when you reach out to us at (727) 586-0060, we waste no time in handling all the water and damage to your residence so you can move back in as quickly as possible.

Our Team Of Specialists Explain Our Hoarding Cleanup Procedures For Belleair Bluffs

1/19/2019 (Permalink)

We are here for you!

Hoarding Cleanup Procedures For Belleair Bluffs Families

For Belleair Bluffs residents, keeping a clean home for themselves and family members is usually a simple process. In some circumstances, this process can become a painful task when a parent, sibling, or other family member is found to be a hoarder.

Hoarding cleanup in Belleair Bluffs homes requires extensive training in mold detection and removal, water damage restoration, and more. SERVPRO restoration technicians meet industry standards in each field to clear out a home from the incredible amount of debris in even a small home and then clean and return it to a livable condition.

SERVPRO teams start with pulling out the massive amount of property for disposal. As they expose any hidden mold, technicians spray it with an anti-fungal agent to kill active spores. In this situation, we recommend complete disposal of all paper and even clothing infested with mold. For larger items like furniture and appliances, our teams can determine if the item is restorable and then rely on the family to decide on disposal.

If they discover water soaking into the floors and carpets, team members remove and dispose of the carpet immediately. For wooden floors, an inspector examines the floorboards for rot, mold, and other damage. If there is only mold or minor warping, they can use anti-fungal cleaners, water extractors, and air movers to remove the infestation and carefully return floorboards to their original condition.

While our technicians work as quickly as possible, we also understand that not everything in the home needs disposal. Some furniture or other items can be heirlooms, or simply important to the family. Our teams can stop as often as needed to determine what might be important, or simply needs to go into a dumpster with the other debris.

At SERVPRO of Largo, we understand that speed is not always the best option to clean out a home. Our goal is to restore each residence to the family in the best manner possible, no matter how long the process may take. If you need our services, call (727) 586-0060. We are here for you.
