Remediating Mold Growth in This Largo Laundry Room

Constant humidity for the entire household and the generated heat and steam from doing laundry created ideal conditions for mold growth. When the damage was visible on the drywall, as you can see in the Before Photo, our SERVPRO of Largo team was contacted to provide remediation solutions. We can help with:

  • Mold remediation
  • Black mold
  • Attic mold
  • Mold inspections

One of the first steps that our professionals took when reaching this damaged room of the house was to determine the best methods of containing the damage. Active mold colonization can spread quickly in moist environments. With the entire household combatting elevated humidity, physical containment on the door openings and over the vents for the HVAC system protected the rest of the property from migrating mold spores.

How Controlled Demolition Helps Prevent Further Mold Growth

Among the most direct measures that our SERVPRO team took when addressing the black mold along the base of the walls was to begin cutting out impacted portions of drywall. The entire room was chalk-lined off at two feet from the floor so that oscillating saws and drywall hand saws could make a consistent cut across the room and remove the lower portion of the surface wall system. This flood cut approach provided options for several mold remediation solutions, including:

Preventing New Mold Threats

During the restoration of mold infestations in area homes, it is essential to provide long-lasting preventative measures. Our team discarded the drywall removed from the building. The exposed wood and back of the drywall that is often the most sensitive to mold development were treated with our powerful biocides to make them uninhabitable. These same products would eliminate any mold colonization in its earliest stages.

As you can see in the After Photo, several tools were used in the moisture removal needs of the residence. Low-profile centrifugal air movers, like the one you see closer to the top of the After Photo, forced warm air through the room and its structural cavities for the low grain refrigerant dehumidifier depicted in the image to collect the moisture the evaporation generated.

Repairs Needed After the Mold Removal

With a general contractor license, our professionals provided multiple repair and reconstruction solutions for this house. For this property, much of this work would be spent in replacing removed drywall, which you can see in the After Photo taken during the drying stage. With the drywall installed and painted to match the rest of the wall, trim could be replaced.

One of the underlying concerns that often gets overlooked with even professional restoration that does not include our SERVPRO of Largo team is addressing the moisture concerns of the structure. Without providing suitable solutions for this damaged house, the certainty of recurring mold and microbial threats is high. As it was determined, the bulk of this threat came from higher moisture content for the coastal area combined with steam, heat, and moisture generated from the washing and drying appliances. We encouraged dehumidifiers to regulate a balance of moisture content in the structure to prevent recurrences.
